Tera Devosnal Atyachaar.... !!!

It is past midnight and still I am awake, can't sleep :( Well, I agree there can be a hundred reasons for that, but tonight it is not the stock markets or the symphony of gnats, but a ‘jagrata’ in my neighborhood, and as usual the innocent neighbors like me who detest loud music have to bear the shrill fusion of devotional and pop music of those professional night-mongers, aka the jaagaran-mandali, roaring out on giant speakers. I simply wonder whom these loudspeakers are meant for??? Neither the interested believers sitting right there nor the uninterested mortals sleeping (no! only trying to sleep) in their homes need them. And surely, God Himself doesn’t need them at all ... haha!!

Though loudspeakers are banned but (the real spirit of India– an example) who cares! If I have a reason to celebrate, I make (read ‘force’) others to join too, willingly or unwillingly. Such people hold the entire society to ransom. The jaagran started at 9:00 PM, and grew louder and louder, reaching its peak around midnight! Even bhoots (ghosts) must be getting irritated by this disturbance in their peak roaming time!

It’s ok if one has a reason for celebrating but such brazen display of callousness towards others only irritates the hell out of them. There are people of other faiths, non-believers, sick, old, infants, animals, students, or many such who need complete silence at least at night, after a hectic day.

Similar thing happens with a typical Indian marriage. The band and the blaring music can drive the nearby people nuts. My friends from abroad always stay excited to attend an Indian wedding but I detest all the noisy drama that goes in its name.

Anyways, society is a group of people, dude, u are not living alone in a city. Celebrate your happiness but please, with a little sophistication. Follow whatever religion you wish to, but without hurting or disturbing others.

  1. Very very thoughtful. The concept of flaunting your celebration is absurd. You want to celebrate, do it in private, why trouble others? I have been in this situation helplessly numerous times and sort of become numb to it.
Hope you catch some sleep tonight :-)

  4. I think the "loud" Indian is a way of life these days... People just need an excuse to make a din...sigh... My neighbour has to have his "band-jam-session" only when I want to sit down and study. It irritates me to the core and when I question, I get a "I'm doing it in the confines of my home...mind ur business". A few police complaints later, the story still is the same, except that the relations have soured here.

  7. i liked the title of ur post...devosnal atyachaar. must say u r witty. As for the post yaar u r right...one can celebrate whatever they want to...but it should be done in a limit. I remember when my granny was ill a few year ago...there was this navratri festival happening and there was loud mujic being played. She could not sleep well and to add it she fell more ill coz of lack of rest. One has to bear in mind that they are not the only one's living in the city.

  8. Hi Gayathri

    thanks yaar :)

yaa this title just striked me suddenly while brushing my teeth!
after all this too is one type of atyaachar only naa !...haha!

yes yaar, same way there are so many cases like infants..loud noise can hamper their hearing ability for life, animals..I still remember my pup used to get just too scared during diwali season.

one must consider all these things while celebrating :)

  12. I totally agree with the noise pollution issue.Just because the noise is of religious origins doesn't mean that it cannot be curbed. I was gonna write a blog entry about this on my blog but am gonna hold on to my thought for a couple of weeks , just so that i can blog in peace with no work deadlines and such.
I am glad fellow indians feel the same about the noise pollution.

  14. Hi India Unlimited

thanks & welcome to Hummingwords :)

I agree wid u, so what if the noise is of religious origins, noise is noise and can disturb pple seriously (like Gayathri's grandmother).

looking fwd to ur post on the same issue :)

  17. nice post. and so very true. i get so pissed when such celebrations happen near my hostel, specially during exam time. at even 2 or 3 am yaar. so pissing off...

anyway. am a law student. so u can actually file a complaint against such people, if they make loads of noise after 11 pm and even 9 pm in sum places... :P really...u can complain to the police and the police would come and close the thingy down.
    nice post... :)
