The Copycat Gatsby!

When I saw the first look of ‘The Xpose’, I felt like laughing out loud on Mr. Reshammiya’s copied style. I do not understand why he is hell bent on torturing the audience with his hero-panti antics. Soon to be released ‘The Xpose’ that also stars Yo Yo Honey Singh, whose spiritual sermons are a must have in every pervert’s collection, has tried to present Himess-bhai very much like the magnetic Jay Gatsby portrayed by Leonardo Di Caprio in the 2013 movie ‘The Great Gatsby’. Be it settings, background or choreography, everything is just so similar! However, Himess-bhai, with a dead serious expression, looks too ordinary compared to the charismatic Leo in the toast raising scene (against the backdrop of the sky). This made me ponder over another serious thing- why we are so short of imagination and creativity? Why do we not create our own styles, settings and themes? We take pride in our culture, art, music and blah blah blah but if looked closely, most of the filmy music and even the choreography are straight lifted from Hollywood.

Take the scenes from the hit ‘Barfi’ for instance. From Charlie Chaplin’s b&w movies to various Hollywood hits like ‘Notebook’, Barfi is more of a collection of copied scenes, translated and presented with a desi tadka.  Also, the choreography of the latest hit ‘Baby Doll’ too, has been copied in parts from a music video by Jennifer Lopez.

Why do we lack thought that is novel and different? Rather than lifting with such an audacity, we must aspire to create art that is worth aping. The point is to change the grass root attitudes and turn the tables. By the way, just check out this Xpose trailer. Even the posters are so similar...gawd!

Oh! Fitzgerald’s spirit must be brooding in heaven!

    1. Hi Enchantress

Thanks a ton for the lovely comment!

Yes, I agree, we create cheap songs like 'besharmi ki height' and all and copy blatantly from Hollywood...we need to check if we have some self-respect left or not.

hah! ya, his botoxed face is looking rather funny in the promos :P

  5. A copy is never so appealing or beautiful as original. It betrays lack of imagination and creativity as you have rightly lamented.

    1. Hello KP Sir

exactly, a copy is a copy. As Plato said, every copy takes us further from the truth and the good. So, copying can never create art that is capable of bringing a greater good.

  8. Definitely agree with your view on how healthy it is to come up with our own creative thoughts and ideas rather than copying directly from somebody's work!

Our duty is to refrain from watching such movies, of course it's difficult to ignore movies with popular star cast, but if things have to change for better - it's time to boycott such movies and hope the media makes an extra effort to shine light on this.

There are some wonderful examples of creative cinema in the Indian film industry and how successful those movies were in the past - so it's time these movie makers realize that there is enough talent and potential out there to tap-into instead of making themselves miserable by taking the easy road!

Good choice of topic, well written Ankita! :) Cheers!! :)

    1. Hi Sai

Thanks a lot for liking the post!

Old Indian cinema is only what we can call our 'own'. Nowadays, it is all about running after west and copying everything, even their discarded fashion and social trends...disgusting.

  9. Copying has now become so blatant that they think it is a form of flattery. Someone should tell Himesh to stay away from acting. Please stop torturing us.

yes, it is really sad that we are still into flattering the west, we need to realize our own spine and the richness of our culture.

    1. Hi SG

Yes, we need not do any flattery as we are quite capable ourselves, we just need to become a bit more self-respecting.

  11. And they have roped in Irfan Khan too!! Incredible!!!

It is really baffling to note that even Himesh Reshammaiya has a niche audience for his movies and songs!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL.

There is a thin line of demarcation between copying and being inspired. In the golden era of b&w movies there were many remakes from Bangla and Sough Indian movies into Hindi. But those all proved to be classics - the originals as well as the remakes.

    1. Hi

hahah! yes, Irrfan should have agreed to this movie I think.

ya, I think he is a joke but still there are people who are his ardent fans! hehehe!

I agree, being inspired can boost your own creativity buy copying can destroy it completely in the long run.
