We Are The Spark !

Entry for The Stayfree & Healthy Day contest
Sometimes, life may be a bit harsh but if some basic facts are overlooked, it can be even more torturous than hell. Missing woods for the trees is a specialty of our government that most of the time claims to focus on areas like education and infrastructural development schemes for rural areas. However, what we fail to realize is that education is a ‘superstructure’ that is, it requires a foundation to stand upon. That foundation often lies neglected and hence all such super-schemes fall flat on their faces. I am talking about the very basic thing called the hygiene, the female hygiene especially, because it is rather more complex in nature. Unfortunately, even in this era of ‘India Shining’, girl children are still considered an unwanted responsibility or ‘amaanat’ of the would be-groom’s family. This is why even their own parents do not bother much about their education and development. Add to this the callous attitude of the insolent government; much of the development of rural areas is left to kind hearted and dedicated NGOs willing to lend some support to destitute village women living in abject conditions.
The statistics paint a grim picture; according to a research study, Sanitary Protection: Every Woman's Health Right’(October 2010), carried out by the leading information and measurement company, A C Nielson- a staggering 75 percent of rural women do not have the required knowledge regarding female hygiene. This study, conducted on a sample size of 1,033 rural women by a team of 151 gynecologists, was reviewed and endorsed by NGO Plan India.

As per its report, almost 81 percent of rural women use unsterilized clothes instead of sanitary napkins, mainly due to price factor. The alternatives like sand, ash, husk, unclean rags and such things are widely used and increase the chances of reproductive tract infections by 70 percent. The price factor, poor financial conditions of rural women and lack of female hygiene are constrains that discourage the use sanitary napkins. More than 45 percent reuse their sanitary cloth and some 70 percent shade-dry them thus increasing the changes of tract infections. These facts are quite painful since a healthy woman is the core of a healthy family
As said earlier, education and such things are superstructures, but we have to build a proper foundation for them. It is certainly an arduous task but not impossible if we all join hands together and spark a change. Most important change has to be done in the direction of building a strong base for welfare of girl-child. Another very depressing fact that survey has uncovered is that adolescent rural girls have to miss more than 50 days of schooling every year only because of menstruation and related troubles. Even more upsetting is another fact- some 30 percent of rural girls between 12-18 years, completely drop their studies because of inadequate sanitary facilities in their schools and/or after they begin menstruating. Lack of sanitary facilities is not a new thing in our country. It is one thing that has never been taken seriously but in fact is one of the most basic elements in the development of a healthy country. We need to create a strong base first not ignoring this important thing in overall aspect of female hygiene.
Earlier, SNs were misunderstood as a bit elite, a luxury rather than a necessity but according to the study- around 97 percent of gynecologists recommend their use as a strong preventive measure against reproductive tract infections, and even cervical cancer.
Some steps can be taken by us so that we can contribute to the betterment of rural girls and women.
1.  Easy Distribution- NGOs, no doubt, do their best but one thing they can be requested and persuaded to add to their list is the wide distribution of sanitary napkins at very low costs.
2.  No Tax - Campaigning against the taxation of sanitary napkins is must. We can start a sign petition and involve more and more people into the wave. Government should be requested to include SNs under essential health items.
3.  Low Cost Versions- With a majority of rural women compromising on their health due to price factors, local cottage industries should be persuaded to make low cost napkins especially for poor womenfolk.
4.  Sanitary Bank- Creation of a ‘Sanitary Napkin Bank’ where urban women can donate as per their wish can be very helpful.
5.  Vending Machines - In schools, primary health centres and rural areas to ensure availability of SNs at all times at very low cost can be extremely helpful.
6.  Clean & Safe Ladies Toilets- Most of the time, girl miss schools due to poor toilets and washrooms. This aspect needs special attention. Proper ladies toilets in schools can curb the high dropout rate.
7.  Educating Maids - About the hygiene and infections- Charity starts at home- educating your maid about use and health benefits of sanitary napkins can be a small but a significant step in this direction.
8.  Group Power- Lastly, those who have both, a will and some time, can make a group and visit under privileged schools for educating girls about female hygiene.
Choosing a SN like Stayfree’ is also a step towards betterment since some proceeds on every pack sold go to UNICEF. These are some steps we can undertake to make the lives of rural women better. If we really wish to develop, we need to come out of our stifling cultural cocoons as well for we still believe in mindless myths and taboos attached to menstruation.
We cannot become a superpower or even a developed nation with such dwindling bases. In fact, 100 percent in Singapore, 88 percent in Japan but mere 12 percent of women in India, use SNs. The Union Health Ministry has declared some initiatives to provide SNs at very low prices, this scheme too, as usual, is yet to take off.
It is high time to start a spark of change for the betterment our less fortunate daughters and sisters. As Mahatma Gandhi said ‘be the change you wish to see’, we need to stand up and change what is undesired. After all, even in our diversity, we are still related by one common bond- the bond of ‘womanhood’. We all should help each other and enjoy true celebrations of this scared relation! After all,
We Are The Spark !

I’M ALIVE !

यत्र नार्यस्तु पूज्यन्ते रमन्ते तत्र देवता
 यत्रैतास्तु न पूज्यन्ते सर्वास्तत्राफलाः क्रियाः
(Gods reside where women are respected,
Where they are not, all efforts go futile)

This quote from the ancient Hindu text, ‘Manusmriti’ seems more like a joke in today’s scenario! However, if looked closely, it describes the importance of women in a society and relates their happiness and well being with that of deities! Awesome! Now the issue is that most of the time, women themselves step back to be taken for granted. This is the root cause of all troubles, mental physical and social. It is high time we change this attitude and spark a change by imparting due importance to our mental health and well being.

A woman is the eternal giver that’s why she has been compared to mother earth since times immemorial. She is the one who sustains life and carries a family forward, one who imparts character in the generation to arrive. She has also been called the most beautiful creation of God. In Hindu mythology it’s believed that after hundreds of births, one gets the female body. However, practically, a girl is considered either a machine for household work and childbirth or a punching bag capable of absorbing all the negativity without any protest. Housewives, tired and bored often suffer from low self esteem. They have accepted that taking crap from everyone around including their own children as a part of their lives or fate. All these things like the endless drudgery of a banal household life, low self esteem, uncared for body lead women to take themselves for granted and suffer silently all the unwanted and rather invited insults and abuses from unsophisticated people around them. Most women ignore their rights and focus solely on their responsibilities and hence are sucked into an endless cycle of unpaid enslavement in the form of a bad marriage.

If we do not wish to spend a lifetime suffering from this problem or that, it is time for change, to come out of our little suffocating cocoons that are incapable to accommodating our self-respect. Not compromising on your dignity is the best gift that we, women, can give ourselves in this short and unpredictable life. There is no point in sacrificing our health and happiness daily for those who do not value us.

Here is what we can do to spark a change overall:

Ø STOP taking unnecessary crap. Assert yourself and learn to say NO. It is important to have sharp claws, though hidden.

Ø Care for your looks for self confidence. Also, stay happy and make it a habit, a way of life and a part of your basic attitude. It helps, it really does.

Ø Buy quality and well fitting lingerie Also, use good sanitary pads like Stayfree instead of old rags that can be very harmful as they are an open invite to dangerous infections.

Ø Get yourself a new trousseau! Doesn’t matter if you are working or not, good clothing do gives confidence.

Ø Socialize. Travel and meet new and interesting people.

Ø Have an online presence and do not forget to read news papers.

Ø Pursue a hobby seriously and keep on learning.

These things will help for sure and prevent paid trips to a shrink later in life!

Our regressive society is equally responsible since girls are forced to be ‘good’ which means letting others control your life, focusing on superficial graces and charms to land up rich husbands and believing that a good marriage is end of the world. Most of the young women are pushed into this ‘pati-parmeshwar’ trap and their voices are silenced behind the dirty veil of ‘Indian culture and ‘sanskaars’. This repression of real feelings and opinions gives rise to an obvious rage which, if not vented, takes the form of depression and ‘n’ number of physical issues. Psychological factors, especially repressed emotions, negatively affect the equilibrium of a healthy body leading to several psychosomatic disorders, which may manifest as serious physical ailments including cancer. Research also shows that women who suffer a bad domestic life have more chances of getting cancer and dementia.
If you find any woman with unnatural symptoms like

Ø Premature graying of hair
Ø Constant headaches
Ø Skin eruptions
Ø Phobias
Ø Manias
Ø Compulsive disorder or
Ø Behavior disorders

Please try to talk to and sort her issue out.  It important to avoid our tendency to gossip about each other’s secrets since such things can seriously backfire and are unethical too. Hence, like a true lady, please try to pull another one out from neck deep troubles. You can also involve yourself in social work or support any good cause like girl-child education. Thus, a change is needed in this direction to make women completely i.e. mentally and physically healthy and happy.

It is time to stop brooding over our miserable fate and dump that box of tissues. We need to realize that God has gifted us with a very strong spine and a will of steel. We are the spark! We are the change! So, it’s time to say loudly and proudly-

‘YES! I AM ALIVE!

Use & Throw

A few days back, I went to my neighborhood stationery shop to get the refills for my favorite pen, Cello Gripper. I have been brand loyal to this very product for more than a decade or so. I usually keep extra refills in stock but when the last one was used, I decided to get a few more. However, to my surprise, I was told that the company was going to discontinue the refills and now this pen too, has joined the list of ‘use and throw’ items.

I remember a school friend of mine used small black ‘use & throw’ plastic pens her aunt got her from London. She found them ‘trendy’ and would dispose one every week or so. She gave me two of them but I found it quite annoying to throw away the entire plastic body after a single use. Now, I think, it has really become a fashion, a trend these days.
It is indeed a matter of concern. Adding to the waste and overloading recycle plants is a foolish thing to do. According to statistics, in India, the consumption of plastics will increase about six-fold between 2000 and 2030. Cutting down on plastic waste and reusing things are important requirements for creating a healthier planet. Already, India recycles a good percentage of plastic waste but simultaneously, we also need to focus on reusing things and cutting down on per capita plastic garbage.

Check this out!

I had read somewhere that the Germans use three separate waste bins for dumping their garbage. Even German kids never forget to segregate their waste before dumping. This is appreciable. We too can save our planet; we just need to make small efforts at our individual level in recycling waste and reducing carbon footprints.

These days, this concept seems to have seeped into relationships as well, that have lost their sacredness and sanctity. People change partners, make girlfriends, boyfriends and dump each other after ‘use’ so easily as if they are not dealing with real emotions but one of the ‘use & throw’ pens!

Now the pen ‘Gripper’ itself has been discontinued and I am really saddened by this

My Art on Cover Page!

Months back when made a pencil colour sketch of my favorite author, Mr.Ruskin Bond, I had not imagined that it will appear on the cover page of a book!
The book 'Ruskin Bond’s World’ has been published by the Modern History Press, USA.  My sincere thanks go to Mr.Volkman of MHP.

I had mailed the original sketch to Mr.Bond and he was kind enough to send me a sweet autograph that I will always treasure!

The sketch is there on my other blog, ‘Sketchosphere’ and can be seen here

WOW: 38 missed calls in 10 mins!

Yay!!!

WOW: 38 missed calls in 10 mins! He wondered what was going on'

“I am not getting what your problem is? Does he beat you, Slap you?” asked the mother quite irritatingly.

“No mummy, but please talk to him and his family.” the daughter replied

“Then? What will we talk about?”

“But I am sick! I live in a jail, literally. He checks up on me every half an hour or so, sometimes even every fifteen minutes.’ The daughter replied with teary eyes.

“Does slapping only amount to cruelty? He had guts to record my line-phone conversations. He enquired with the neighbors about me mamma!” she added

“And how did you get to know all this?” asked the mother

“Singh aunty told me that. I found the recorder under the table. Sometimes, he locks himself up in the room and refuses to come out for hours. It is too much papa” said the daughter as she switched her cell phone off and threw it away in disgust.

Beta, it happens. He loves you. Every boy shows his love in a different manner.” The mother tried to pacify her.

“By being so obsessive? Is this love papa? He does not allow me to work even. I left my job under his pressure” she again looked sadly at her father.

Beta, he is well settled and do not forget that you are enjoying the comforts you only dreamt of.” The mother tried to throw in some positives.

“So? Is freedom not a thing? Mummy, diamonds have blinded you to my deep agony. A foreign honeymoon is not a surety of a good marriage. He avoids taking me out on social occasions even. If he does not trust me, it is better to go our own ways” the daughter said firmly.

“I agree beta, he is a bit possessive but he is handsome and well settled too. And you are making a scene out of a minor thing” The mother said as she paced up and down the room.

“A bit? You call this a bit! The small dreams that a girl harbors and the ambitions she nurtures over the years always fade behind the glittery wedding to the rich groom. They lay like dead under the flowery aisle that often leads to a golden prison. He comes home for lunch usually unannounced and gives me strange stares that match the shades of an internal agony and helpless doubt of a juvenile.” The daughter said as she looked her mother in the eye.

“See, we do not want your philosophy. We have one more daughter to marry, can’t you see girl! If you cannot help in finding a suitable match, at least do not create troubles.” The mother heaped on the chair avoiding the eye contact.

“Mummy, I cannot live with a psycho like this. Firstly, you did everything in such a hurry that I could not get time to interact properly with him. I got to know his rotten mind only after marriage. I am repenting your mistake mummy. Look papa, are you listening?” said the daughter as she wiped another tear.

“I think you should stop this nonsense now and focus on your personal life. What will you do if he gets interested in another woman? Where will you go then? Hold your life girl; hold him fast before he slips away. After all who finds such a prince so easily! The mother said as if trying to push her outside the house.

“Alright, there is no hope I can see here. I am going back to that dark hole”. She said, switching on her mobile.
“My God! Look at this papa! Do you need more proof now? I switched it off for just 10 minutes!” the daughter said as she gaped at the screen in awe and irritation.
Beta, probably you are right. I think it is time to talk to him and his parents seriously and if required, seek medical help.” The father said and stood up when he saw 38 missed calls in 10 mins! He wondered what was going on.

PS: Mental troubles and deviated behavior are not taken seriously in our country. Instead, marriage is considered to be a panacea of all such issues. Visiting a psychiatrist or a councilor is still a taboo. There are so many girls who are stuck with such abnormal spouses. It is necessary to seek help in such cases; it can save bigger troubles in future.
